An updated photo of Dandy, now known as "Bugs", with
his new pal "Bingo"
and this wonderful letter from his new mom:
I bought a donkey out of
desperation.
I
had two horses that had been turned out together for twenty years.
Sadly, my gelding had to be put down due to intestinal problems. That
left the mare all by herself. She whinnied and paced the fence all
day long, looking for her best friend...but he was not to be found.
Her eyes were so sad. I knew that if I didn’t find a new friend for
her, she too would die.
I
was advised to get her a goat. Been there, done that, don’t want to
do it again. I love goats but they are just plain naughty. A friend
suggested a donkey. I flew to my computer and Googled donkeys.
Turning Pointe Donkey Rescue popped up. Now, you just can’t buy a
donkey from them, you have to be an approved buyer. This insures that
the donkeys go to a good home. This process takes a while....time
that I did not have. I made a phone call to Sharon, the head of the
Rescue. I told her my sad story and she told me to hook up my trailer
and go pick up a donkey. If I didn’t pass the test as an approved
buyer, they would repossess the donkey. I went the next day and
picked up Dandy, a 31/2 year old gelding. Having had Arabians and
Saddlebreds for twenty five years, little Dandy (40 inches tall) sure
looked strange. Short legs and BIG ears.
I
brought Dandy home and put him in the stall next to the mare so that
they could see and smell each other. For about a week, I wasn’t sure
this relationship was going to work. Every time Dandy got close to
the mare, she would pin her ears and squeal. But Dandy never gave up,
he wasn’t afraid of her, even though she was twice his size. She
would squeal at him and he would look right at her and hee-haw. I
just knew he was telling her to get over it and like it or not, he WAS
going to be her best friend. Eventually everything came together and
now the mare watches Dandy like a hawk. Maybe she’s afraid he’s
going to disappear one day too.
Dandy is a joy to have around. He’s more like a big dog except for
his very loud hee-haw at very strange times during the day and
night. I have come to love this little guy; he brightens my day
and just makes me smile.
