Donkeys Adopted In August 2008

Harlan has been adopted by Robert and Susan Scharp of Big Rapids, Mi.

Also joining Harlan and the Scharps is TLC Acres Midnight Ruckus, a lovely gray mini gelding from TPDR friends Toby and Ona Lehman, Nappanee, Indiana.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Scharps!

Sharon,

The "boys" are a constant treat.  As you can see from our granddaughter, Eme, they are fun for young and old.

They race each other around their pasture, through the barn stall and out the other door and then stop and wrestle before starting all over again.

Susan has found they give her the cold shoulder when she tries to spray their feet.

Keep up the great work,

Bob and Sue Scharp

***UPDATE 3-12-10***

Hello!

All is well here and the boys are doing great! We put a round bale into their pasture and they seem to love it but I'm still feeding hay inside if the weather is crappy out.

I had to stop putting carrots and apples in with their grain…they started playing musical grain bowls until the treats were gone and by the half the grain had spilled! NAUGHTY BOYS! Now I leave the treats hidden throughout the barn...on the ledges, by the water buckets, on top of the feeders etc and they are gone by the next feeding.

Robert and I think that Jullian is "testing" his leadership. We think Harlan has been the "leader" until now so it is interesting to watch! Sort of like a teenage boy testing the dad! It sure gets the rest of them going too!

We can't wait to meet and bring home Jack W.!

Take Care!  Sue

***UPDATE 8-5-10***

Hi Sharon,
I thought you might like an update on Simon (listed on your adoption as Cooper).  We adopted him in August 2008 and wanted you to see what a fine little donkey he has become.

Jill practiced leading him and showed him in halter and showmanship last year in 4H.  Although they did well, they had the most fun winning the costume contest (Simon was Zorro) and walking in the parade where he became an instant local celebrity.

Simon is now the veteran of four parades and is quite the crowd favorite.  He is the undisputed PR guy for the 4H horse & pony (and donkey!) club.  Whenever he and Jill are there, you can here the crowd say "Look!  Here come the horses!"  Then, when they see Simon, you hear cries of "OH!  LOOK AT THE LITTLE DONKEY!".

Last August, when Simon turned 3, we began his driving training.  With some help from Jerry Patterson of Ravenwood Farm (just down the road from us), we got started with voice commands and ground driving and he made his debut at the Christmas parade of lights.  He was decked out from head to wheels with reindeer antlers, a blinking red nose and dozens of lights decorating his cart.

This year, Jill & Simon added the driving class in 4H where they took the blue ribbon and defended their title as costume champs.  The theme was cartoon characters so they went as Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny.  The competition really stepped up but Simon is so cute, I think he will always be the one to beat.  C'mon, how can you not win with a donkey that will wear pants and little boots?  Here are some pictures from the fair.

Simone was adopted by the Lugthart family of Byron Center, Mi. Simone should fit in perfect with the rest of the Lugthart donkeys!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!
