Donkeys Available For Adoption

Pompous and Lizzie

*** NOTE--these two donkeys
will be adopted as a pair only***

Hi,

Let me introduce myself.  My name is Lizzie, and I’m writing to tell you about myself and my brother, Pompous.  We were born in Indiana and moved to our present home in Oxford, Ohio after our first loving owner, Linda, came down with cancer and passed away.  Our present family were very good friends with Linda, and when asked, they happily took us and our mother, Lady, home with them.

We settled in very quickly and have been happy in southern Ohio with our own barn and fields, and our neighbor horses.  Seven years ago, after some long struggles with arthritis and teeth that had worn down badly (she was almost 45 years old), our mama went over the rainbow bridge.  We still miss her, but we are happy to have each other as best friends.

That brings us to current times.  I’m the big sister, about 18 years old, and smaller in size.  Pompous is about 17, and usually lets me be the leader, although we’re pretty democratic about leadership around here.  We could live to be quite old, like our mother, which means that we could possibly outlive our current people.

While they are still healthy and can take care of us, we have heard them talking about downsizing in a few years, which means they will have to make plans for us.  And, since they are getting older, anything is possible – if something were to happen to them, we’d need to have an emergency plan, anyway.  We know they both love us very much, and they want to make sure that we are properly cared for, so now is a good time to do some planning for our futures.

In looking for a new home, it should be noted that we are not perfect.  We are a bit overweight, have had some hoof issues, and really like the taste of a wooden fence.  We have not been trailered since we moved to Ohio, because our farrier and vet make home visits.  Our mother was trained to pull wagons, but we have never “gone to school”, so we can’t brag about how talented we are, but we are awfully sweet and gentle, and love a good apple, bag of carrots, weeds, thistle or poison ivy.

We’re very curious, love to meet new people, and helpful if you have a project to work on – like a couple of big dogs!  Neither of us has ever been bred, and Pompous has been “fixed” – although we didn’t even think he was “broken”……

Truthfully, the best possible situation for us would be if we could stay together, since we’ve been together for so long.

So the search is on for a new home.  We are not really in a hurry, but hope to find a new home and new people to love, who will cherish us as much as our current people do.  They are pretty picky and want to make sure we have the right home with people who can appreciate how unique we burros are.
