Grandma Oodie and Jackie Boy

In late September I received an email from Cindy Wrobel. She is the Humane/Animal Control Officer for Walworth County, Wisconsin. Cindy had been contacted by a woman (Kym Mack) who was taking care of 2 donkeys (mother and son) where the owner passed away. The owner has only a son who lives out of state and is not able to care for the donkeys himself. The property the donkeys had been living on had just been sold and Kym could no longer continue to provide for them. After all, she had been their caretaker for the past eight years and they  were not even her donkeys! Cindy had pretty much given up finding a placement for them in Wisconsin, and then found Turning Pointe`s website and emailed me about the pair.

I asked Cindy to send me some pictures, ages, and to consult with Kym about the general condition of the pair. When the information was given to me I decided that it would be out of the question to transport them any distance. Jackie Boy is thought to be in his mid teens, but Grandma Oooodie easily could be 30+ years old and very arthritic and had surely foundered in the past.

What to do? Who could and WOULD  be willing to help these two old timers? I knew immediately who to call on. Kelly Dehnel of Wausau, Wisconsin. Some of you will remember Kelly and her donkey TPDR Hamilton from our virtual show several months back. She is truly a kind and compassionate person with a heart big enough to take in any donkey that is in trouble. Sure, she and husband Gene would go for them. In several days the two old timers were adjusting to life at Gene and Kelly's beautiful farm in Wausau.

We are very concerned about Grandma Oooodie as she appears to be painful some days, but then other days she seems to manage a bit better. She has had a recent visit by Kelly's vet, and will be seen again next week for films of her front feet and legs. She is an old, old lady and we are not sure what the future holds for her. For today, both she and Jackie are where they will be much loved and cared for. Kelly will give them BOTH A HOME FOR LIFE.

Thanks Kelly, You are one special lady!

Hi again Sharon,
I got so worked up over Lonnie, I forgot to tell you that I did not have my surgery. On the Thursday before it was supposed to happen I was VERY ill. I went to the hospital and they said they thought I had the flu. Oh my!! I didn't think I would live through it. You know something though it COULD NOT keep me from rambling out to visit and feed my buddies! Ha. That is some STRONG love I'll tell you because I could hardly walk, but there was NO WAY I was letting them down. They need me as much as I need them. Anyway, just thought I would give you an update. I have the surgery rescheduled for the 27th, but I'm going in to talk with the doc on the 20th to get more questions answered before I take the dreaded plunge. Ha.

Grandma Oodie and Jack are both doing extra wonderful!! The other night I went out to feed them and I couldn't find Oodie, then I saw a shadow laying in her house and my heart just sunk!! I thought OH NO!! I reached down and wiggled the shadow, and it never moved!! I thought "Oh Oodie, please be alright"! Then as I turned around there she stood nudging me for her bute. So, then I thought oh no, it's Jack. Well, it was and do you remember Jack?? The Jack that would kick and run away???? I used to know a donkey like that, but the only Jack I know now is a SWEET KIND AWESOME guy that is becoming so sweet he let's me lay with him in the bedding and snuggle. Ha. The shadow was Jack and he is so different now that he actually lays there and let's me snuggle with him. It's just precious. What a baby! I told Hammy that he better keep the charm turned on because Jackie boy is treading on his territory. LOL

Oh well, with the surgery delay, it gave me a little time to get Hammy and Coffee bean in the house for some Christmas pictures and I'll be sending some your way along with your pictures. I'll be in touch. Take care,

Love from Kelly and the 8 angels!
