Ty

What amazing progress this little guy has made! Now that his gelding and rather extensive FIRST EVER hoof trimming is behind him life is finally "lookin` Good!"

Ty now has several other "uncles" as companions and mentors, lots of green grass, and finally the chance to learn those things he was never taught. He has learned that brushing feels real good, and the fly spray bottle is no threat to his very life!

He now willingly picks up those twisted little front feet, and worries less all the time about the back ones. He was a real quick study when it was time to learn all about donkey treats too! Ty was NEVER foundered, just neglected! His hooves will surely get better, but it will take many months to re grow new ones! Remember, it took three years of NO hoof care to get in such a dreadful state. He is NOT lame, and amazingly has not been so even after the work we had done on him.

Meet TPDR Ty a three year old spotted (but mostly white) gelding. The photos below show hooves that had NEVER been trimmed in all of Ty`s three years. When we got him, oh what a sad site to see! Very thin, big bloated belly, very long  hair and coat, and those dreadful hooves.

The front hooves came off the coronets and were folded completely over, rather like a half a sandwich without the benefit of being cut in half. I can't imagine when the bottoms of those little hooves had ever touched anything other than more hoof material.

Two de-wormings and a weeks rest with good food later and off for a trip to Kern Road Veterinary Clinic. There he underwent his castration and a very extensive first hoof trimming. I collected a very sore little donkey the next morning. His front feet were wrapped in Bata dine soaked bandages and he had a sore BUM to boot. I don't know for sure who took it worse, him or me!

Yes, he did have a few rough days, but the Bute that I gave helped a lot. He laid down A LOT and hobbled just a bit when walking around his sand pen. After several days I would walk him out to a grassy area behind the barn. he would eat a bit of grass then go down and rest those sore feet.

Well today, not quite 2 weeks after his visit to the veterinarians I walked him out as usual, removed his lead and HE TOOK ONE GREAT LEAP AND BECAME AIRBORNE!!! Bucked One time only and started in on the grass! Little Ty is a three year old, but looks and acts like a yearling at best.

He spent his time prior to coming to TPDR in a dirt enclosure with two jennets. One jennet is with us and the other found a great new home as well.
